The House GOP Bill will affect individuals with health insurance on several levels. The bill would remove employer coverage requirements in larger companies and would make it possible for employees to pay an unrestricted amount for essential benefits. Under Obamacare, businesses with over 50 employees were mandated to provide health insurance. With the new GOP bill, this requirement would no longer be mandatory. Furthermore, Obamacare provided limitations on how much employees could pay for essential benefits, such as hospitalization, newborn care and prescription drugs. While state governments hold jurisdiction on defining what qualifies as essential, the new bill would allow them to redefine “essential” in whichever way they choose. This means that essential benefits could technically be completely removed (undefined) and larger companies would then have the opportunity to require an unlimited amount under insurance plans.
