Due to uncertainty in Washington, both health insurance companies Aetna and Wellmark Blue Cross & Blue Shield have announced that they will pull out of Iowa’s marketplace exchange for 2018. The risk being followed by the lone remaining company, Medica. If all three companies decided to remove themselves in 2018, there would be a blackout of health insurance providing services to one third of Iowa’s counties, reaching 140,000 individuals. While several Senate Democrats have written to the Trump administration, urging them to encourage companies to continue to sell in the exchanges, Republicans are using the case of Iowa as an example of why Obamacare is failing.
