Federally Facilitated Marketplace
When the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010, Michigan opted to go for the federally facilitated marketplace (also known as the exchange). Although, the state entered a partnership with the federal government, which means the Department of Insurance and Financial Services oversees all operations in Michigan.
Purchasing Health Insurance
All state residents can purchase health insurance in the marketplace, whether you’re an individual or a collective household. Those who are incarcerated or are illegal migrants are not permitted to purchase a plan through the marketplace. It’s also important to note that new tax credits provided by the federal government can help partially subsidize your monthly premium.
For those who cannot afford to purchase health insurance during the Open Enrollment, you can apply for Medicaid or CHIP. These are for impoverished individuals or children and the program is administered by each state, but is regulated and heavily subsidized by the federal government.
Healthy Michigan Plan
Some residents may be eligible for a program called the Healthy Michigan Plan, which provides coverage at a really low cost. There are a few things to keep in mind though:
- Must be between the age of 19 to 64
- Must not be eligible for Medicaid
- Not currently enrolled in Medicare program
- Must not be pregnant when applying for this plan
- You can only earn up to 133% of the federal poverty level
- Must be a state resident
