What Happens if Trump Defunds Planned Parenthood?

Trump is inching closer to defunding Planned Parenthood, a move that many pro-life constituents are praising, but this move is doing more harm than good for millions of Americans that depend on the program to aid with family planning. What “family planning” means has always been a hot button topic in politics.

How Does the Government Fund Planned Parenthood?

The majority of federal funding Planned Parenthood receives are reimbursements from Medicaid. It’s the fraction that comes from Title X that is at stake if Trump’s proposal passes.

What is Title X?

Since 1970, Title X has been backing over  $250 million for birth control and other reproductive health care services for around 4 million people each year who depend on Title X. Planned Parenthood accounts for 13% of all Title X-funded clinics and serves 41% of those people who rely on Title X for care.

What Does Trump Want?

Trump wants to defund Planned Parenthood and impose a ‘gag-rule’ to Title X family planning program clinics from providing abortions or even sharing information about where to receive one safely.

“This proposal does not necessarily defund Planned Parenthood, as long as they’re willing to disentangle taxpayer funds from abortion as a method of family planning,” a Trump administration official explained. “Any grantees that perform, support or refer for abortion have a choice: disentangle themselves from abortion or fund their activities with privately raised funds.”

However, the supporters of Planned Parenthood services argue that by taking Planned Parenthood off of the funding program, it mostly hurts the people that Title X was put into play for in the first place.

“This rule intentionally strikes at the heart of the patient-provider relationship, inserting political ideology into a family planning visit, which will frustrate and ultimately discourage patients from seeking the health care they need,” said Clare Coleman, president, and CEO of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association. “This clear attack on family planning care could result in lower-quality care or none at all for people struggling to make ends meet,” added Coleman, whose organization represents publicly funded family planning providers and administrators.
